"A Ghost Story" by: Mark Twain RJ#10

11/2/11
Dear Mrs.Zrihen,

The book that I am reading is called "A Ghost Story," by: Mark Twain.  There wasn't really a said quote in this short story but if I had to choose a good quote, it would be, " When counts is what is on the inside, and not what is on the outside," because it is liking someone for their looks and not who they really are, which comes from their personalities.  Before reading a book, I look at the genre, and then I look at the synopsis to get a sneak preview so I can tell if I would like it or not.  While reading a book, write words that I don't understand in the book, and I put sticky noes in the main places of the book so that I can use them later.  Last but not least, After reading a book, I look up all the words that I didn't understand, and then I do my reader's journal for Mrs.Zrihen.  The genre of this book is Short Story, because it is short and it is just explaining the main parts of a real book.  The main characters in the story are the big monster, and the girl that helps him.  The protagonists are the girl that helps him, and the big monster.  The antagonist is the big monster.  There is no foil in this short story that I am reading.  The setting of this book takes place in a forest wear this young girl is hiking.  The exposition of this book is that a girl walks around on a hiking trip alone and ends up finding a mysterious cave with a big monster that has lived there for a century.  The climax of this book is that she has found a person she can rely and trust on.  The falling action, is that the big monster is too dangerous for the little girl to be with or take care of.  The resolution of this book, is that if the girl doesn't find a better place for the big monster, he might kill her.  The main problem was that the girl shou;d've never found the cave with the monster in it.  The author's tone in this book is very strong and vivid about how he wanted his characters to sound.  The mood he was in was mad and lonely.  The theme of this book was to entertain reader's on how people and monsters can become friends.  The author's point of view is that he wanted to show people that mysterious ghost stories that scare kids, can also be fun and exciting at times.  The author's purpose for writing this book was to entertain kids and tell them things that will make them really happy but kind of sad most times.  Three response starters are, I like the way the author wrote and explained himself in this story.  I noticed how the author really put focus into thinking of how to write it.  I wish that their was a little bit of action in this story.  I rate this story a 10 out of 10 because I liked how the author was detailed about everything and thought everything out before writing it.  That is why I think this story would be really good for teachers and other readers to share with kids, family members, or friends.

Sincerely,
Danielle Ben-David

Title: Will Steve Jobs' final vendetta haunt Google?

Author:  Michael Liedtke

Source: The Miami Herald Newspaper.

The topic of the article is that google stole things from the Iphone to use it for the Android.
The main idea of the article is (implied/stated): The main idea of this article is that Steve Jobs created the Iphone and google stole his features to use it for the Android.  This article is stated.
The author’s purpose for writing this article is to show reader’s how Android is a fake and stole the ideas/ materials from the Iphone.
The author’s perspective in this article is objective/subjective (biased) because it is saying the truth and not adding or taking anything away from the article. This article is subjective.
The pattern of organization of the article is compare and contrast because it is comparing the Iphone to the Android, which was really stolen features from the Iphone.
The reason the author chose this pattern for the article is because it knows what is right and what is wrong.
The text features included in the article are:
The picture of Steve Jobs.  The picture helps by showing reader’s who Steve Jobs was.
The caption under the picture.  The caption helps by telling us detailed information about the picture.
All the dates in the article. The dates help by telling reader’s what time period the events took place at.
This article is about (a summary in your own words): how Steve Jobs, the creator of the Iphone, and all apple projects, made the Iphone design from scratch using his knowledge.  Some random person from google decides to steal the features from the Iphone and create a new fake phone called the Android.
The significance (importance) of this article is: that people should think of their own ideas and instead of taking others and making new products, they should atleast ask to borrow some parts of the creation.
What I learned from this article is: Some people make mistakes, but this was no mistake.  This was a theft from the creator of Android, which was participated by google.
What I liked about this article is how detailed the author was, about the issue and how he knew everything about what was going on with Steve Jobs, google, and Android creators.

What I did not like about it was the way Android had to steal Steve Jobs features from the Iphone instead of making their own creations.
Who should read this article and why:  I think that people who are interesting in technology/electronics, would be very fascinated with this article.
This article reminds me of (text-to-self) because it shows how people steal others ideas and use them to make money.
(text-to-text) : I think this is text-to-text because it tells readers how things are made and stolen in one shot.
(text-to-world): I think this is text-to-world because it is Steve Jobs and Android facing the world on which creation is better and more useful.
New vocabulary I learned:

Reader's Journal #4 "Princess Diana" by: Joanne Mattern

              Dear Mrs.Zrihen,

The book that I am reading is called,"Princess Diana," by Joanne Mattern.  A quote that I thought meant a lot to me was," Always be yourself," on page 24, because to me it meant that you should always believe in yourself and never put yourself down by saying you can never do something.  The reason people always say that they can't do something, is because they either hear it from other people, or don't have a lot of hope in themselves.  I think this book really inspired me because it also reminded me about how I always put myself down.  I would do a lot of things, before, during, and after reading a book.  Before reading a book, I would look at the cover to see if it looks interesting, and also read the synopsis to see if the book has a hook to it.  While reading a book, I would put a sticky note on every page that I thought had a great quote or meaning to it, and put sticky notes on pages with words that I don't understand, so I can look them up after and see what the book meant by that.  Last but not least, After reading a book, I would look up all the words, and then write a readers journal, about what the book is about.  The main characters in the book are Princess Diana, Prince William, Prince Harry, and Prince Charles.   The setting of this story takes place in Sandringham, United Kingdom, where she was born.  Princess Diana's parents divorced in 1969 and her mother ran away so her father had full custody for her and her three siblings.  She was home-schooled until the age of nine.  Princess Diana married Prince Charles on July 29,1981 and got divorced on August 28,1996.  They had two boys named William which is the oldest, and Harry.  That is the life of Princess Diana.  My point of view of this book is, that I chose it because I think that Princess Diana did a lot in life.  This book was inspiring to me, because I never knew that someone can have such a good heart and put it all to good use instead of yourself.  She is a person that truly cares about the world.  I would rate this book a 10-10 because I like that she puts people first instead of herself and always gives to others.  I recommend this book mainly for girls because I don't really thing boys would care about Princesses, but that is only my opinion.  I really enjoyed reading this book and I hope everyone will love it just as much as I do.

Sincerely,

Reader's Journal #3 "Justin Bieber:First Step to Forever" by: Justin Bieber

Non Fiction

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
The book that I am reading is called,"Justin Bieber:First Step to Forever," by Justin Bieber.  A quote that I thought meant a lot to me was," Never Say Never," on page 7, because to me it meant that you should always believe in yourself and never put yourself down by saying you can never do something.  That is why the quote was very meaningful to me. The characters in the book are Justin Bieber, Jeremy Bieber, Pattie Mallete, and all of Jusin's fans, work crew, and friends.  The setting of this story takes place in a small town called Stratford, Ontario in Canada.  Justin was a little boy when he found out that he loves to play instruments and sing. He never had any lessons and was always trying out new things that he heard.  One time, Justin and his mother (Pattie) decided to post videos of him singing on Youtube, so his whole family can see and not miss out on anything.  Justin started posting more and more videos of himself and soon got millions of views.  That's how it all started for him.  My point of view of this book is, that I chose it because I like Justin Bieber, and because to hear about someone who came fom nothing and now is the number one pop star in the world, is amazing.  This book was interesting to me because I like all the passion he put into it about his friends and family, and what it meant to him when he left them. I would rate this book a 10-10 because I love the way he expresses himself and how much he cares and appreciates everything he has in life.  I recommend this book mainly for girls because I don't really thing guys would be interested in a male singers life.  That is what and why I chose this book to read.

Sincerely,

Reader's Journal #2 "Beastly" by: Alex Flinn

Fantasy

,Dear Mrs.Zrihen
".The book that I am reading is called "Beastly," by: Alex Flinn  A quote that I thought had a meaning to it was, "what' important  is the beauty on the outside, not the inside," on page 17 because it's like saying that whoever is not beautiful on the outside, is worth nothing, which is not true at all because whoever is beautiful on the inside, is the one who cares the most about other people then themselves only.  That is what I think that quote means and meant to me.  There are many things you do before, during, and after reading a book.  bookBefore reading a book, I would look at the cover to see if it looks interesting, and also read the synopsis to see if the book has a hook to it. The characters in the book are Kyle, Linda, Kendra, and Will.  The setting of the book takes place, in a school event program, where kids run against each other to vote for school president.  This kid named Kyle, thinks that everything is based on looks.  So one day, this witch named Kendra, decided to teach Kyle a lesson, by making him the ugliest person alive on Earth.  The only way he can turn back to his normal self, is if someone says "I Love You," within a year to him.  That is what the book is about.  My point of view of the book I chose is, that love comes within the inside  and not with whats on the outside.  I would rate this book a 10, because it shows people that they don't need to fear the outside but mainly to fear whats inside.  I would recommend this book for boys and girls because, I want people to learn the
.value and quality that this book meant to me when I read it

Reader's Journal #1 "Princess For Hire" by: Lindsey Leavitt

Fiction

             Dear Mrs.Zrihen,
The book that I am reading is called "Princess for Hire", by Lindsey Leavitt.  A quote that I thought had a meaning to it was,"I would do anything, to basically, avoid portraying my actual life," on page 2, because it is like saying, that you don't love your life and you would rather do anything then go back to being yourself in your own life.  Everyone is who they make themselves to be, and thats what makes people unique. The characters in the book are Desi, Meredith, Celeste, Kylee, and Hayden.  The setting of this book takes place at a pets store called. " Pets Charming Pets Store."  This book is about a girl named Desi from Idao, that makes unique t-shirts,  she has a friend named Kylee.  They both go to the same school, except Desi is always treated badly by Celeste and her gang, and is also embarrassed by her parents and her job a lot.  One day, she picked up a newspaper and started reading through it, when a unique, green inked ad popped up saying that they needed a teenage girl to pretend to be Princesses.  Desi ended up getting the job, and loved it.  The only bad part, was that she couldn't tell anyone about it.  After being hired for her job, she just became better and people stopped bullying her.  That is what the book is about.  My point of view of this book, is that I chose this book because I liked the cover and the synopsis and it looked very entertaining to read.  I really enjoyed reading this book, and I would rate it a 7, because I thought it was good, but it didn't make sense at first.  I recommend this book for girls only, because I really don't think boys would want to read about princesses.  That is what this book is about.

Sincerely,
